The Best Disney & Universal Resorts for Families of 5
Disney and Universal resorts are pretty strict when it comes to the number of people allowed to stay in a room. A family of 5 can still stay in a room capped at 4 guests if at least one of the children is under the age of 3, but your options will be to book adjoining rooms or rooms designed for 5 guests once all the children are over 3. Many families don’t want to book adjoining rooms and want to stay in one room, so where can you stay?
Disney World
Disney World has options for families of 5 in all three resort categories - Value, Moderate, and Deluxe.
In the Value category, All-Star Music and Art of Animation have suites that will accommodate families of up to 6 guests. All-Star Music Family Suites will be the least expensive option for families who want to stay in a suite (and include 2 bathrooms), but these suites are more expensive that booking 2 adjoining standard rooms. The added benefit to the suite is that it includes a kitchenette with fridge and microwave which provides a nice option for snacks in the room.
The Art of Animation Suites also sleep up to 6 guests, include 2 bathrooms, a kitchenette, and are themed for the Lion King, Cars, or Finding Nemo. These suites are quite a bit pricier than the suites at All-Star Music though.
In the Moderate resort category, guests can book 5th Sleeper rooms at Caribbean Beach Resort and Port Orleans Riverside. These rooms are the same size as the rooms designed for 4 guests, but have a child-size pull down bed. These rooms are generally less expensive than the All-Star Music Family Suites but don’t include 2 bathrooms and a kitchenette, but they are larger than the regular rooms at the Value resorts.
The Cabins at Fort Wilderness are a unique option that sleeps up to 6. These cabins have a full kitchen and living area, but only one bathroom. These are Deluxe accommodations a quick boat ride to the Magic Kingdom.
These Deluxe resorts have rooms with an additional daybed to allow for 5 guests in their resort room:
Beach Club
Boardwalk Inn
Contemporary
Grand Floridian
Polynesian
Yacht Club
Disney also has Deluxe Villas that can accommodate up to 12 guests, but for families of 5, you’ll either need to book a Studio or 1-Bedroom Villa, depending on the resort.
Disneyland
Booking 2 connecting rooms is always an option for extra space and bathrooms, but all 3 of Disneyland’s resorts have room options that sleep 5.
Pixar Place, the Disneyland Hotel, and Grand Californian have rooms that have 2 queen beds and a daybed to accommodate 5 guests. All 3 also have suites that are much pricier but would sleep a family of 5+.
Then the Grand Californian is a Deluxe Villa resort that has studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom villas that would sleep a family of 5.
Universal Orlando
Universal has different resort capacity rules than Disney does. Many of the traditional rooms at Royal Pacific, Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel, and Sapphire Falls with 2 Queen beds allow for a 5th guest with a rollaway bed.
Universal also has very affordable 2-bedroom and family suites at Cabana Bay Beach Resort, Endless Summer Dockside Inn & Suites, and Endless Summer Surfside Inn & Suites. These options provide a lot of space and unique room designs to accommodate larger families and include extra living space and kitchenettes.
The Aventura Hotel additionally has Kids Suites that have 1 King Bed, 2 Twin Beds, and a sleeper sofa that will sleep a family of 5.
I personally like the creative room options that Universal offers its guests at budget-friendly price points that don’t require 2 connecting rooms.
